Pop up & roll up banner stands: what to know

"Pop up banner" and "roll up banner" usually mean the same thing in practice: a printed graphic that retracts into a weighted aluminium base and pulls up on a telescopic pole. The name varies by region rather than by product. (The exception is a "pop up display" — a concertina frame that makes a whole backdrop wall. That is a different thing, and it is on the trade show page.)

The differences that actually matter are invisible in a product photo. Base weight decides whether it stands straight or leans. Retraction tension decides whether it rewinds cleanly in two years or creeps out of true. And the print stock decides whether you can see the previous graphic ghosting through when a window is behind it — which is what happens with thin film and no blockout layer.

We spec the heavier base and grey-back blockout stock as standard, because those are the two failures anyone notices from across a room, and neither is expensive to avoid at manufacture.

  • Replaceable cassette

When the offer changes, order the graphic alone. The hardware outlasts many prints.

  • Blockout stock

Grey-backed so nothing shows through from behind — the giveaway of a cheap banner.

  • Widths

850mm standard, 1000mm and 1200mm for reading across a hall, plus doubles that lock into a wall.

  • Padded carry bag

Included. The bag is what determines whether the stand survives its fourth show.

Common questions

What is the difference between a pop up and a roll up banner?
For retractable banner stands, nothing — the terms are used interchangeably. A "pop up display" is different: that is a concertina frame forming a full backdrop wall, which we list under trade show displays.
How long does a roll up banner take to set up?
Under a minute, no tools. Lift the graphic out of the base, clip the telescopic pole into the top rail, and it stands.
How long do banner stands last?
The hardware, years — the mechanism is the part that eventually tires. The graphic depends on light exposure; direct sun will fade any print, which is the usual reason for a reprint rather than damage.
Can I use one outdoors?
Standard retractables are indoor products; wind catches them like a sail. Ask about weighted outdoor bases or feather flags instead.

Not sure which is right? Ask us — we will tell you if the cheaper option is the better one for what you are doing.
